Where the Wrong White Shows
Ilkley is largely Victorian, built in stone when the town was a spa, and a lot of the houses have never been substantially altered inside. Big villas below the Moor, solid terraces round the centre, and the Ben Rhydding end with its own mix of period and later family housing.
Kitchens in these houses are frequently bespoke, either originally or from a later fit that was designed round a room nothing standard would suit. High ceilings, deep skirtings, tall windows and a lot of reflected light off stone. That combination is unforgiving: an off-white with the wrong undertone reads grey or green on the doors even though it looked right on the card.
It is also why a respray beats a replacement here more often than anywhere else we work: putting something off a shelf into a period room usually makes it look worse, not newer.
How It Runs
Worth the Drive from Cross Hills
Twenty five minutes is a real drive, and it is the reason kitchens travel and we do not. The doors and drawer fronts come back to the booth in one trip and return in one trip, so the distance costs a couple of journeys rather than being priced into every day of the job.
In a period house the prep matters more than the paint. Old cabinetry has often been waxed, varnished or painted more than once, and each wants a different approach before anything is sprayed. That is where the ten days goes, and it is also why the carcasses and frames get masked off and sprayed in place, round cornices and pelmets that were never designed to come off.
